What is Gouache?
Gouache - pronounced 'goo aash' is a high pigment paint and is commonly compared to both acrylic and watercolour paint, as it must be mixed with water to spread smoothly across the paper. Gouache is often described by many as an ‘opaque watercolour’ as it is thick, and when applied the paper beneath won’t be as visible as traditional watercolour. Gouache is also easily blendable and unlike most acrylic paint, when it has dried gouache can be reactivated with water! It is workable and re-workable meaning you can go back with a wet brush and blend parts of your painting, even after it has dried!

Gouache paint is perfect for beginners as it is one of the easiest types of paint to use. It works best when mixed with small amounts of white gouache as this helps it become more opaque, but the thick paint can also be watered down to create a watercolour like pigment. Gouache is a fast drying paint so you don't have to worry about leaving your piece to dry before starting the next part, but you can go back and reactivate it if you need to.

The term gouache was first used in eighteenth century France, and this paint can be used on almost any surface. I have personally used gouache to paint my illustrations onto paper, card stock, wood, acrylic and ceramics! Although it is not permanent and the paint can be washed away, but it is still great for painting decorations!
